Cellulite Creams: What You Need to Know

Ask any woman one of the top things they would like to change about themselves and getting rid of cellulite is guaranteed to be one of the top three answers.

From drastic weight gain and loss to changing hormones and giving birth, cellulite seems to easily find its way on a woman’s body, but does not easily find its way off making it a real nuisance. Unfortunately, changing your diet and increasing your exercise level is only part of the overall plan to eliminate cellulite.

Sure, you will lose weight through these changes, but you may not lose the cellulite. Then there are those dreaded genetics that give you very little say or control over your body’s composition and where cellulite decides to settle itself.

What is Cellulite?

Before you try to get rid of cellulite, it is probably best to understand what it is and why it happens. Cellulite’s more technical terms are adiposis edematosa, dermopanniculosis deformans or gynoid lipodystrophy.

In simpler terms, cellulite is fat that is beneath your skin that has a bumpy appearance due to the fact that it pushes up against your connective tissues. This is what makes the skin have that puckered or dimpled look. While it is not harmful in any way, it is unsightly to women who have it.

When classifying cellulite, there are three gradient levels. Grade 1 means there is nothing clinical, but a small examination of the cells from the affected area shows some anatomical changes. Grade 2 also shows anatomical changes through a microscopic exam, but the skin is now pallor and has a decrease in elasticity.

Grade 3 shows all of the grade 2 indicators plus a rough appearance on the skin (similar to the peel of an orange).

What Causes Cellulite?

Contrary to popular belief, cellulite is not only something that afflicts overweight women. Normal weight women can also have cellulite. Genetics definitely play a role when it comes to how susceptible you are to getting cellulite so chances are if women in your family have it, you are likely to have it as well.

However, other factors can also increase your chances of having cellulite including a lack of exercise, a slow metabolism, yo-yo dieting that causes significant weight fluctuations, dehydration and the thickness of your skin. The color of your skin also has some effect on the appearance of cellulite. It is often less noticeable if you have darker skin.

The most common places for cellulite are on the hips, buttocks, stomach and thighs. For most women, this is not good news when bathing suit and shorts season rolls around.

It takes a psychological toll especially when a woman eats right, exercises and is not overweight. The only temporary relief is to apply a self-tanner to darken the skin to soften the appearance of the cellulite.

But this solution is only temporary and not a long-term fix.

Treatment Options for Cellulite

There are currently many different options to reduce cellulite. Some of them can be done at home and are inexpensive while others are more costly and require some type of procedure. Here are a few of the more expensive options:

Liposuction: This very common surgical procedure removes the fat deposits that cause cellulite. However, what you may not know is that it only gets rid of deep fat and not cellulite.

Mesotherapy: Europeans use this to relieve discomfort from inflammatory skin problems. The procedure involves the injection of minerals, vitamins, enzymes and amino acids into the tissue that is just beneath your skin.

Mesotherapy can break down fat and improve the look of cellulite, but it also comes with risks like infection and swelling.

Laser Treatment: Although the FDA has approved a laser device for treating cellulite, it is unclear if it really works as well as it claims. The idea behind it is that it will melt the fat under your skin and break up any fibrous bands that are there as well. It also claims to stimulate the production of collagen which makes skin firmer.

Spa/Massage Treatments: While this treatment option is not as expensive or as invasive as the others, it is also not a long-term solution for treating cellulite. It will diminish the dimpling look of the skin, but that may have more to do with the fact that the treatment helps to remove excess fluid.
